CESAREAN SECTION

The distressed mother |
What is Cesarean Section ?
Deciding for the surgery The veterinarian examines the vagina of the dam for the actual status. He performs digital vaginal palpation to determine the size of the fetus and the pelvis of the dam .Then a manual vaginal delivery may be performed, if unsuccessful, to save the life of dam and the puppies C-section is recommended. Radiographs or ultrasonography may be done to know the number of puppies and their viability.
How C-section is done
This is major surgery and is done under general anesthesia .Anesthesia
for C-section is different then other procedures as here anesthesia is
given in such a way that it will not harm the puppies inside uterus and
is safe to the mother at the same time. Over the abdomen an incision is
given under general anesthesia. Then after entering the abdomen the uterus
is approached, and exposed out of the abdomen. The uterus is having two
horns loaded with puppies .As per surgeons discretion the next incisions
are given over the horns separately or on the body of the uterus from
where the puppies are squeezed out. The placenta is also removed with
each pup and the umbilical cord is of the pups were tied with clean cotton
thread. Nursing of the pups are important to stimulate the pup's respiration.
Then the uterus body or the uterine horns incisions are closed with absorbable
sutures and then the abdomen .Skin incision is closed with non absorbable
sutures, which can be opened after 7 days.
Sometimes the mother can be spayed if future pregnancies are not required.Mostly mothers can revive from anesthesia with in 1-2 hrs. With the newer better anesthetic drugs like Propofol now a days it is very good for the puppies as before the drugs like ketamine -valium.
