EFFECT OF FIREWORKS ON ANIMALS
Fireworks displays and celebrations brings Confusion, Anxiety and Fear
into the lives of animals ,causing many to run away from their homes
.fireworks and crackers are not animal friendly. After depaawali like
festivals there are more reports of MISSING PETS , TRAUMA AND INJURIES
AND REPORTED CHANGE IN BEHAVIOUR OF HOUSEHOLD PETS , CHAGE IN ABILITY
OR WORKING AND COMPANION DOGS.
Guide dogs are sometimes left so terrorized by the explosions that they
suffer severe emotional distress and are unable to assist their companions.
Fireworks explosions can produce a blind panic in animals that can lead
to serious injuries ,deep rooted ,debilitating fears. The ears of most
animals are considerably more sensitive than the human ear. Therefore,
the explosion of a firework (which can emit sounds of up to 190 decibels,
a full 110 to 115 decibels higher than the 75- to 80-decibel range,
where damage to the human ear begins) not only is proportionately more
disturbing to an animal, it can also affect an animal's acute sense
of hearing. And animals who are too close to firework explosions often
suffer significant burns and eye damage. Fireworks generate a noise
level higher than the noise from gunshots (140 decibels) and low-level
flying jets (100 decibels). Irreversible ear damage, such as tinnitus
and loss of hearing in humans starts at the 80-decibel range.
Fireworks produce light, noise and air pollution. The explosion of fireworks
also releases poisonous chemicals and particle-laden smoke, contaminating
our natural environment. As a consequence, fireworks pose a hazard to
wildlife living in or near areas where firework displays occur, as well
as wildlife downwind. And these chemicals are also hazardous to companion
animals living in the area where they are detonated. And we can not
forget humans with asthma and other health problems.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
A few precautionary measures can make sure that human festivities do
not turn into animals tragedies.
1. Keep your companion animals indoors and in a familiar room, and be
sure to supply them with enough food and water. They may try to burrow
under a bed or in a corner,so do not force them to come outside.
2. Make sure that the room is safe ,that the curtains are drawn and
that the windows and doors are closed. Also make sure that someone can
stay with them to comfort them.Remember that loud noises seem even louder
to animals because of their keen hearing.Playing soothing music helps
keep them calm.
3. Take your dogs for a walkduring the daytime before the celebrations
begin. Also remember to take them out later at night.never walk them
when others are lighting firecrackers, which could hamr or scare them.
4. Refrain form celebrating with firecrackers near aqn animal shelter
or a zoo.
Animals in caged environments are already unsettled because of their
unnatural surroundings.Noise and smoke causes them to panic, and they
might hurt themselves. Also, the pollution caused by firecrackers is harmful.
5. And don't forget about all the dogs and cats who have made homes
in your neighbourhood.Lure them into safe areas with food, and keep
them there.
Consider using a garage or shed for few days to keep them safe.
6. If tou see any children tying fircrackers to animals'tails or throwing
firecrackers at animals ,stop them immediately.
7. Make a first aid kit with some burnol and gauze so that you will
be prepared to tend to injured animals.
8. Instead of ear-splittingly
loud and dangerous bombs, light up your houses with diyas, lamps and other
decorative ornaments that are friendly to the environment and to animals.
