Dearest doc
I am having a guinea pig with UTI and as I think my vet is less exposed to treating exotic animals I like to know the antibiotic which are safer for guinea pigs. I wish to talk to you over the phone ?
Mahender Sharma Delhi

Dearest Mahender,
Antibiotics causes disturbances in gut microflora of G.Pigs which leads to diarrohea and
sometimes irreversible. Most of the time vets prescribes penicillins and its synthetic derivatives which are really unsafe and may causes enterotoxemia so the commonest antibiotca are avoided for G.pigs viz .ampicillin and amoxicillin( plane or potentiated ).

However potetiated sulha ( trimethoprim+ sulha ) drug are safe for them and for the urinary tract infections they are very good and surely give good resuts when given for two weaks .
Good luck.

Sir,
I am a person who is into looking after animals of
all kins.I feed quite a lot of stray dogs too.Recently
I came across a female mongrel who was bleeding from
the vagina.
I called the vet who said it has got vaginal
tumour. He has given it an injection. The bleeding had
stopped fpr a few days. Now it has slowly started
again.Could you suggest any sort of treatment for the
same.
Thanking you,
Yours truly,
Capt.Krishna Kumar E Mail-sailor_boy_ph@yahoo.com

Advice

Transmissible veneral granuloma/tumor is a kind of tumorous condition in dog which can be treated successfully with vincristicine sulphate @ 0.5 mg /m2 body surface area intravenously commonly available with the chemists .

In India the is very common in stray dogs and can be life threatning if not treated .Thanks to you for your concern for the stray animals.

Get the dog injected every weak and usually 6 shots are required .Care should be taken to give the injection in proper dose and to avoid perivascular sepage. The injection do have few temporary side effects.Somtimes antibiocs are needed with this as the white blood cell count is low in this disease.

Sirs,
I would be highly grateful if you could please be
kind enough to let me know where in India,I would be
able to buy Frontline Plus Anti Flea medicine.
Thanking you,
Yours truly,
Capt.Krishna Kumar.
N.B.Would be grateful if you could send me their phone
nos too.I am at Manipal.Karnataka.

Advice

Sending you the frontline plus on your mentioned address as mentioned over telephone via courier.Us it as per accompanied intructions.

Hello Doctor,

I got your information while i was looking for vet
advice for our 8 year old german shepherd "Tiger".Last
year since diwali he has bleeding in one nose.Since
then he has been bleeding on and off but for the past
few months his bleeding has increased.

My father took him to the veterinary hospital but they
could diagnose the problem. His blood work,x ray
everything came back normal.Per the vets his ecg was
little abnormal they said that's because of his age.
Unfortunately they do not have mri or scan facilities
in chennai. His regular vet suggested that one of his
nerves might be damaged.

Please advice if we can give him any medication or any
other course of treatment.Any advice or feedback is
appreciated.

Thanks
Sangeetha

Dearest Sangeetha,

I am really sorry for your pet.

So many tests and not a single abnormality!!!!!!
I am suspicious .

Now using my clinical accumen I can say that the
blood tests are not normaland I am sureof that. kindly get the
cbc with platelet count .His platelet count
will be surely below normal.

I have seen a good number of apperantly normal dogs
with epistaxis (nasal bleeding) suffering from
chronic eherlichosis.

get me the platelet count as soon as possible.

s.p.singh
Hello Doctor,

I would like to thank you for your valued opinion. We
are based in florida and our german sheperd is in
chennai with my parents.

I have asked my father to get the platelet count as
early as possible. Also he will be undergoing an
endoscopy tomorrow.Unfortunately the vet even refused
to give the report, this is supposedly the best vet
hospital and college in chennai.

We would like to help our pet in whatever we can and
its unfortunate that 8 years is considered an old age,
whereas in usa dog lives as long as 15 years.

Sincerely
Sangeetha

Oh yes
madras vet college is very good, but i dont know why they refused .

very sad

your father can get blood sample collected and examined from some private practitioner there .

keep on updating me regarding his health.

I am on a visit visa in Doha Qatar and due to return home to Goa soon. My daughter's pet a Pekingese female dog is much attached to me so I wish to take her home but I am told the dog has to be booked by airway bill as cargo in accordance with the regulations. My questions are;-
1) Do I need an Import Licence? How do I get one?
2) Where will I get delivery of the pet when I arrive at the International Airport in Mumbai?
3)Can I book the dog in a kennel as checked in baggage with Indian Airlines for taking it from Mumbai to Goa.
Plese reply soon as I need to leave Doha by 1St September 2007. Thanks

Dearest Caterine

Thanx for the query.

There is no problem taking a dog as an accompanied baggage.
even from USA you can bring 2 dog with one person.

I have seen there is no problem taking a dog in international flights ,but sometime private indian airline may show reluctancy ( illmannered or say illinformed less courteous staff) but there is no problem.

1. buy one kennel or say a cage for transporting a dog .It is available with petshops .Its a hard plastic safe for traspoting a readily accepted by airline staff.

2.put a steel feeding bowl with water .

3.take a health certificate from a vet .

4.do take vaccination cerificate.

there is no problem taking a dog in flight at all.
happy journey.

do inform me again.

Dear Surendra pal Sing,

Thanks for the reply but I did not get any reply from you to my three specific questions regarding Import Licence and the place where delivery can be taken if dog is booked as cargo.

I am aware of all other requirements regarding Health certificate etc. as those are mandatory requirements of Qatar.

Qatar Aviation has introduced a rule that no live stock can be taken as cabin baggage not even pet dogs. All passengers have to book their pets as cargo for taking the pet on the same flight as themselves.

For obtaining an airway bill for my pet as cargo in an approved kennel I will meet all the mandatory requirements at this end. However I do not know if I will encounter problems in Mumbai for collecting my pet which is going to be booked as cargo.Possibilly it will not come as my other un-accompanied baggage on converyor and I may have to go to the cargo complex which is outside the passenger arrival terminal.

Hence my three queiries were put to you in my earlier mail. I hope you will be able assist in sending me a reply as requested earlier.

Thanks and Regards.
