Care of Dogs in winter In winters avoid to keep your pet outside for long periods, wind chills makes the day colder then it is actually . When taken outside the pet if having short or coarse-hair do surly need a coat or sweater. Be sure to groom your dog regularly and change the dog coat or sweater at frequent intervals as if left for long time over the body it will hamper regular grooming and brushing and may invite skin diseases . Daily check of skin coat is necessary .It will also help to notice any skin affection earlier.Towel or blow dry your dog when it get wet. Bathing is avoided in harsh winters but in Indian conditions one in 45 days of if needed earlier can be done with caution indoors with lukewarm water and mild dog shampoo.Thank god the ticks and flea menace is minimal in winters , but if still noted over the skin avoid anti tick shampoo or bath rather consult your vet for the injection . Paw hair of long coated breeds may be clipped in winter as if paws get wet ,then they don't go dry easily. Cracked paws in winters may pain and invite infections so clipping of hairs around nails and under paw is always good .Petroleum jelly may be applied in case paw is noticed cracked. Adequate shelter is necessary to keep the dog warm ,dry, and away from drafts.Tiles and uncarpeted areas are extremely cold so it is hifhly necessary to place blankets and pads on floors. Regular changing of wet or damp floor bedding is necessary.Be very cautious of external heat sources like heaters as they may burn the pet . Feed extra calories to your dog if your dog is a working animal and spend more time outside . More calories means more energy to keep the body temperature regulated. Dehydration is common in winters in heated houses ,so plenty of water fresh water should be made available to the pets. As people ,dogs are also more susceptible to illnesses in harsh
winters. Consult your veterinarian regarding there care in winters as
few diseases like arthritis may disturb your pet a lot and in winters
there pain is aggravated. Cough and pneumonia is common and need immediate
veterinary attention. |
